Product Research
We were tasked to go and find three categories of products that we would be interested in coming up with a package design that would stand out against the rest of the products under that category. After going to the store and taking pictures of the products on the shelf, we had to choose one product category and research three competitors in the category. I chose energy drinks and researched Monster, Bang, and Red Bull.
Thumbnailing
After seeing the display of energy drinks at the store, I thought a space theme would be pretty dope. I also happened to have a spaceship illustration I created in my first semester that I have been wanting to incorporate into something bigger than a mere illustration. So after deciding the theme I had to come up with a name for the name of the energy drink, and the first thing that popped in my head was “Space Shot”. After deciding the name, I got to sketching the first ideas in my head, trying to come up with a logo (bottom left corner). After not liking that I decided to look at Adobe Fonts for what I was picturing in my head, and found a few I liked and sketched the top left corner before laying out the design of the can on the right side.
Label Design
This is the label I created in Illustrator, and I typed up the Nutrition Label in InDesign, some of the illustrations I have on here are from my illustration I had mention previously. I enjoyed this part a lot, my favorite part of this was making the UFO on the front. Originally the UFO wasn’t there but I wasn't loving the empty space there, so I think it ties it all together nicely, and adds some nice depth to the piece. My main goal of this was to give the illustration depth and some different colors to help distinguish this can from the others on the shelf. I did this by using a gradient in the back, and also using lines pointing different directions to make it seem like you could just dive into the label.
Mocking It Up
Our last step is to either create the physical product or to put it in a mockup. Due to the lack of resources at my house to achieve the look I want, I decided to put my design in a mockup. I created 3 more labels to further show how the brand of energy drinks would look with different flavors. The illustrations would stay the same but the coloring on the can would distinguish the different flavors. The flavors are themed by space terminology.
Revisions
After some revision and some feedback from my instructor as well as my family, I decided to change the colors of the flavor “Moonberry” to make it stand out more from “Grape Galaxy”. I also added another flavor for fun called “Space Candy”.
